WHAT IS A HERB ? When one asks the question what is a herb, one begins to realize how wide any definition must be.Botanists use the term to refer to a plant with a stem that is not woody, yet the word has taken on a larger meaning. A keen cook would probably first think of a herb being a plant employed to add flavor in cooking, such as bay leaves, basil, or thyme. On the other hand, some people might consider herbs to be plants that are drawn on medicinally, such as echinaccea or aloe vera. Mankind, however, has used herbs in many other diverse and ingenious ways: as insect repellents, for strewingon floors and scenting linen, for cosmetics and perfumery, for washing, preserving, and in embalming.
